[♪...] ♪ ♪ >> dana: welcome back to "the five." grand new gallup poll out this afternoon shows governor romney with the two-point essential over president obama. 49-47. after yesterday's new poll showing romney up by four, 49-45. so where does the race stand in charles krauthammer. >> romney got nothing out of tampa. obama got bumped maybe three to five out of charlotte. what happened when that debate is romney got it all back. in 90 minutes in one night. maybe even more. right now the race is tied with romney still, i think, having some of the momentum from the debate. i think the rest of this story will be determined by the remaining debates. >> dana: debate fall-out from last week taking place. i like the smile that you just had. because i've -- the trajectory and the headline have been weighing down the obama team. we're going to get to the small ball thing in a minute. that's the fun part of the segment. poll wise for you, what stood out for you of the ones that have come out in the last couple of days? >> andrea: women. pew research center has them dead even at vii-vii. this was a demogr
taken after the first presidential showdown. according to the "fox news poll" the romney ryan ticket got a boost jumping three points while the obama-biden ticket dropped three. the impact of the debate seems greater among independents with that voting bloc jumping five points in support of team romney while team obama dropped 7 points. president obama's opinion stayed the same after the debate while gove romney's rose four percentage points. that gives him a one point lead. still when you factor in the margin of error it is still too close to call. how did the president and governor romney did at the debate? both are weighing in. >> well, governor romney i had a good night. i had a bad night. >> how bad? >> well, it is not the first time i've had a bad night. >> well, obviously the president wasn't happy with the response to our debate last night. >> what's your message to joe biden about tomorrow night? >> well i, you know, i think joe just needs to be joe. jon: joining us now is karl rove, former senior advisor and deputy chief of staff to president george w. bush and a fox news contr
news polls showing mitt romney got a little bub after the debate. hoping to gain momentum when he and congressman paul ryan face off. both are expected to come out swinging. here's a question a lot of folks are asking. can a vp debate really be a game changer? let's ask presidential historian nick ragone. thank you for coming up here. can it be a game changer? >> historically it has not been. if you remember began quail had a bad performance against lloyd benson. dukakis won big. dick cheney abodid a nice job against edwards. for the most part people vote for the top of the ticket. in this case maybe vice president biden can change the conversation which would be a win for obama if he could do that. >> who has more to lose going into this tonight? oo evening paul ryan does even though he is inexperienced. it is a huge opportunity to introduce himself. he needs to hold his own. he needs to be seen as somebody who can step in for romney. there's a bit of a stature gap he needs to close that. >> that could also work in his favor as we saw when dick cheney and john edwards were togeth

the truth. the poll that came out today has obama 51, governor romney at 46. that is the nbc pool. it's going to be close in ohio. i mean, i would be foolish if i told you it was not going to be an incredibly close election, and that's why, you know, both teams, both candidates are working ohio. governor romney has been there frequently. the vice president has been there frequent leave. ohio i think can and will be perhaps the fire wall. but it's an exciting time. ohioans are engaged and involved but americans are. i'm really happy that there seems to be such wide-spread interest in this campaign. bill: would i agree with you, right on, and we should be too. the "real clear politics" average, when you put all the polls together in ohio has about a 1.5 point spread at the moment between president obama and governor romney. thank you for your time. you come back any time, all right? >> i'll take a point and a half. thank you. >> thank you for your time. i'm going to bring in senator pat toomey out of pennsylvania. good morning to you too also there in danville. >> thanks for having me.
. a few fox poll shows that governor romney is leading president obama among a critical group of vote e the independents. they are siding with romney over obama, 44% now to 32%. romney gaining ground since last wednesday's debate, while the president dropped more than ten minutes. bob cusack is the managing editor of "the hill." great to sigh. the all important voting block that can tilt elections one way or another, it does seem they were very swayed by the debate. when you see before the debate they supported obama 43%, now just 32%. are these choices now set or do these independents vacillate with each debate in. >> i think these independents are very wishee washer. a lot of pundits were saying there are no undecidedses, everyone is in their camp. this shows a 16-point swing here. that shows you how big the debate is. now tpher leaning towards romney. that's why the romney-ryan ticket has the momentum and it is anyone's race. in 2008 independents loved obama. in 2010 they rejected them. they are moving away from him after that bad debate performance last week. alisyn: before we move
into the tent mitt romney is clearly proving in the polls that it do serve even with moderating positions, they can and will win. the senator with me right now on the phone. he has a new book, to boot. senator, good to you have. >>guest: thanks for having me on i appreciate it. >>neil: senator, what is your science about the feeling of many of the mother conservative republicans some of whom have been taken back by the moderating positions of mitt romney. some say what happens in a general campaign and others suggest something more sinister. >>guest: i have been pleased he has not moderated that much. i lost a round in the primary with an etch a sketch thanks to a comment and they are going to reset and erase everything and start over and i see nod of that. has he changed his position on taxes? no, he was clear during the republican primary he would limit deductions and limit tax cuts to those who are under $50,000. he was criticized for that. but that was his position now and the idea that president obama saying he has run on this and now he is changing, that is not my analysis of mitt r
of what you see in the polls. this momentum that's very much on the side of mitt romney. and paul ryan. so it is very much up to vice president biden to take a shot here and try to stop some of that momentum because if you see a win by paul ryan, it's covered as a one-two punch. the momentum will continue. we know talking to some of the vice president's aides that he's going to come out swinging. this's the expectation, to be on offense. we've been told he's eager, feeling good and trying to draw a contrast. when you look at the tiny table in the picture, brooke, it is a pretty intimate setting. if he's going to get in to it and draw a contrast, that's sort of code for confrontation. we'll see if he makes good on the promise of the team. >> bring yaannbrianna, do they say something memorable, as in not in a good way memorable? >> reporter: you'll remember he's sort of known as a bit of a gaffe machine. puts in his foot in his mouth from time to time. he said that the middle class buried for four years and that was something that the romney campaign just jumped on. the thing is, while he's

is they still suck. what about the numbers and we look at this in a fox news poll where after the debate mitt romney is now ahead of president obama in terms of trusting him to do a better job on the economy. how much are the american people just not looking at these numbers or at least questioning their veracity? >> i think that american people are having undoubtably as much difficulty translating and interpreting the numbers as much as the professionals are. the electorate is extremely volatile. much more volatile than any person imagine. with romney's numbers bouncing as much as they did after one debate, that shows people -- i do not think it is an election of committed voters, this will be in election of leaners. they are all swaying up there. connell: a lot of people have not made up their mind. these are big moves. we head into tonight and then next week, can the president use these jobs numbers as an argument that jobs and the economy is improving? >> i think, clearly, vice president biden and mr. obama next week will use these numbers to say things are getting better. the burden will
